Virginia Wanjira Kamau, founder and programme coordinator of the M-TATU Initiative

Her story

Virginia Wanjira Kamau is the founder and program coordinator of the M-TATU Initiative (Mwalimu-Mtoto-Mzazi), a voluntary pioneering integrated resilience programme operating across the informal settlements of Kawangware, Kibera, Mathare, and Mukuru in Nairobi County. Driven by a deep commitment to systemic equity and social protection, she established the initiative to address the multi-layered vulnerabilities facing urban public schools, where macroeconomic instability, climate hazards, and household poverty frequently force children out of the classroom. Recognizing that fragmented, reactive aid fails to protect vulnerable youth, Virginia designed M-TATU as an interconnected ecosystem built upon four core pillars: Save, Invest, Protect, and Empower.

Under her leadership, the initiative bridges critical gaps by formalizing community table banking into the parents' economic initiatives, securing long-term assets whose returns fund a ring-fenced Children's Welfare Trust, while simultaneously equipping frontline teachers with digital training, providing secure school-day transit via vetted transport SACCOs, and deploying proactive child protection frameworks. Virginia's vision directly operationalizes constitutional rights and national guidelines, ensuring that teachers, parents, and children function as a synchronized support network so that no child's education or safety is compromised by external shocks.

The four pillars she built on

Save

Formalising community table banking into parents' economic initiatives, so families build their own safety net.

Invest

Securing long-term assets whose returns fund a ring-fenced Children's Welfare Trust, and equipping frontline teachers with digital training.

Protect

Providing secure school-day transit via vetted transport SACCOs and deploying proactive child protection frameworks.

Empower

Ensuring teachers, parents and children function as a synchronised support network that can withstand external shocks.

Initiative in action

The initiative in action

Behind every system in this programme are real people: parents gathering to build their own safety nets, teachers and mentors sitting with young people, partners standing alongside learners, and community members raising their voices in open dialogue. These moments capture what M-TATU looks like on the ground: celebration when milestones are reached, honest conversation when families face hardship, and peer support that keeps children connected to school and to one another. This is the synchronised support network the initiative was built to create: teachers, parents, children and volunteers working as one, so that no child faces a shock alone.
